It is confusing and tends to obscure rather than clarify. The use of the term affect will be limited in this book to those occasions where its use by other authorities requires that it must be mentioned. What then is emotion? We all know what emotion is but nevertheless, as is becoming apparent, it is difficult to define. Perhaps part of this difficulty is due to the fact that human beings function as wholes, and when we introspect about how we operate, we examine our whole functioning and do not break it down into isolated processes such as emotion, motivation, learning, and memory.
When we have an emotional episode we usually become more aroused both physically and mentally. However, some emotional episodes produce more 16 W H AT I S E M O T I O N ? physiological arousal than others. Emotions arising from memory, or from what Damasio (1994) calls “as if” perceptions (such as we may have if watching a film), often have very limited physiological correlates of the visceral or dermal type. It is also quite possible to be physiologically aroused without experiencing a particular emotion, for example after or during, vigorous exercise (Cannon, 1927).
This brings us to the control of the expression of emotion by cognitive forces and social experience. 18 W H AT I S E M O T I O N ? As has already been frequently stated, emotion is often closely interwoven with cognition. Using our cognitive ability, and with considerable practice in social situations, we can learn to control our emotional expression. However, in controlling our emotional expression we are not necessarily controlling the emotion itself. We still can have the feeling. We can go a bit further.
